Mitchell arrested after beating a person with an axe handle.

On Thursday, July 4, 2013 Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 1122 Jackson 68 after receiving a call of a fight. The caller stated that an individual, identified as Connie R. Guffey, age 49, of Newport, had been struck in the head multiple times with an axe handle. The caller also stated that the suspect, identified as Steven Mitchell, age 39, of Little Rock, had fled the scene with his wife and minor children.

Upon Deputies arrival they discovered that Guffey did in fact have head injuries as a result of the fight. He was transported to Harris Hospital in Newport and later airlifted to UAMS in Little Rock.

Mitchell was located in Bald Knob early Friday morning follow a search with the assistance of the Bald Knob Police Department, Bradford Police Department, and the White County Sheriff's Office. He was then transported back to Newport where he was booked into the Jackson County Detention Center on the charges of Battery in the 1st Degree and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Minor.

Steven Mitchell appeared before Judge Barbara A. Griffin of the Newport District Court where he was formally arraigned and his bond set at $500,000.00 and he was ordered to appear in the Circuit Court of Jackson County on Wednesday, August 7, 2013.
