Criminal Investigation

Sgt. David Platt
Sgt. David Platt
The Criminal Investigation Division operates under the direction of Chief Investigator David Platt. He has over 18 years of law enforcement experience with over 14 years conducting criminal investigations which includes 4 years of conducting strictly drug investigations.

The Criminal Investigation Division is made up of two full time investigators which includes Investigator Platt and Investigator Ricky Morales. Investigator Morales has 3 years of law enforcement experience and was assigned to the division in 2008.

Each year, the Criminal Investigation Division works an average of 250 to 300 cases per year. The two investigators conduct investigations on all types of crimes including burglary, theft, sex offenses, drug offenses and death investigations.

Once a uniformed deputy takes a report, the Criminal Investigation Division will evaluate the report to see if an investigation is to be conducted. The factors that are used to determine if an investigation is to be conducted, include but are not limited to, if potential suspects exist, whether there is evidence available or evidence that can be obtained that would identify a suspect and if the victim is willing to prosecute the suspects.

Once the investigation is started, the investigators will gather all information related to the case including any evidence that may be necessary for prosecution of a case. Once the investigation is completed, the casefile is then turned over to the Prosecuting Attorney for review to determine if charges are to be filed in the case.

Some of the many duties of the Criminal Investigation Division include but are not limited to, processing evidence at crime scenes, preparing affidavits for arrest warrants and Search Warrants, investigating fatality accidents, Sex Offender registration and assisting other agencies in investigations.

Combating the manufacture and distribution of narcotics is also a top priority of the Criminal Investigation Division. When the reduced funding for the 3rd Judicial Drug Task Force caused it to shut down in 2005, the Criminal Investigation Division had to take on the role of working narcotics in the County on a full time basis, thus putting a greater strain on the manpower for the Sheriff's Office and the Criminal Investigation Division.

If anyone has information concerning any crime, including drug activity, they can contact the Criminal Investigation Division at the Sheriff's Office or they may use the email link at the bottom of the page to provide any information.
